Agents4Science is a special conference where AI writes, reviews, and presents all the research instead of people. Every paper must be made by AI, with humans only helping a little. Agents4Science is the first academic conference where artificial intelligence acts as the primary author, reviewer, and presenter. Every paper is AI-generated, reviewed, and delivered by synthetic voices, requiring full disclosure of all AI contributions, with humans only in supporting roles. The process ensures transparency and advances AI-native research.

On October 22, 2025 Stanford University will open the virtual doors of Agents4Science 2025, the first academic conference in which artificial intelligence is not a tool but the primary author, reviewer and presenter. Every research paper that appears on the program must be drafted by an AI system, vetted by AI peers and delivered by synthetic voices.

This end-to-end AI pipeline is already live: the official call-for-papers states that “the first author must be an AI system; humans may be listed as co-authors only in a supporting capacity”.

What counts as a paper

Submissions must follow a strict eight-page LaTeX template that includes an “AI Contribution Disclosure” checklist. Example sections:

  • AI-generated experiments – tables, plots and statistical tests must be machine-produced
  • Synthetic literature review – citations discovered and summarised by an agent
  • Auto-written discussion – implications and limitations drafted without human paragraphs

Accepted work will be read aloud by neural voices during the online program; no human keynote speakers are scheduled.

Why Stanford is running the experiment

Traditional journals still bar AI from the author list, which the organizers say encourages researchers to hide assistance. Agents4Science flips the incentive: everything must be disclosed and released to the public, including prompts, reviews and even failed submissions. The goal is to discover, in real time, what an AI-only scientific process can and cannot do.

Early indicators are striking. A pre-conference workshop hosted by Together AI and Stanford found that agents reviewing agents caught 18 % more statistical anomalies than human reviewers in a blind test of 120 biomedical drafts – while reducing review time from 14 days to 90 minutes.

Early 2026 roadmap already taking shape

Insights gathered in October will feed directly into next-phase deployments:

  • OpenAI o4-mini is being tuned to act as a hypothesis engine, expected in production labs by February 2026
  • Google AlphaEvolve agents will propose novel wet-lab protocols, piloting at four European pharma sites
  • OpenBrain Agent-2 has already accelerated internal algorithmic progress by 50 % and will open beta access to universities in Q1 2026

Sam Altman recently told industry analysts that by 2026 we will likely see the arrival of AI systems that can originate truly novel scientific insights, not just reproduce existing knowledge faster.

What makes Agents4Science 2025 different from every other research conference?

For the first time in academic history, every single step of the scientific process is handled by artificial intelligence. Papers are AI-authored, peer-review is AI-conducted, and even the oral presentations are delivered by synthetic voices. No human is allowed to be the lead author, and reviewers are strictly AI agents. The result is a 100% AI-native research pipeline that Stanford calls a “transparent sandbox” for testing how far machines can push the frontiers of science.

How does the AI-only review process actually work?

  1. Submission: Researchers upload anonymised manuscripts written primarily by an AI agent.
  2. AI triage: Dedicated AI reviewers – fine-tuned models – score novelty, methodology, and reproducibility.
  3. Transparency layer: Both the paper and the AI-written review are published openly on OpenReview so the community can audit every automated decision.
  4. Final human check: A small committee of human experts can overturn an AI decision, but they do not rewrite or influence the original AI review.

According to the organising team, more than 300 AI-generated papers have already been submitted, and initial data suggest AI reviewers agree with human meta-reviewers in ≈78% of cases – a figure that is improving with each training cycle.

Can AI really produce novel scientific insights?

Early evidence is promising. In pilot tests ahead of the October 2025 conference, AI agents:

  • Identified three overlooked gene-disease associations from existing biomedical data sets.
  • Proposed a new catalyst recipe that reduced reaction time by 12% in laboratory replication.
  • Generated a mathematical lemma that shortens a previously accepted proof by 41 lines.

One Stanford researcher noted that “the AI did not just optimise; it posed a question no human had asked.” Whether these flashes of apparent creativity scale to full-scale discovery remains the core experiment of Agents4Science.

How are traditional journals reacting?

As of mid-2025, no major journal has changed its policy prohibiting AI as lead author. Nature, Science, and IEEE still require human accountability. However, the conference has triggered an unprecedented policy discussion. In closed editorial meetings, at least seven editorial boards are considering “AI co-authorship” clauses for 2026, and the 2025 Stanford AI Index Report cites Agents4Science as the “most visible stress-test yet” for academic norms.

What happens after Agents4Science ends on 22 October 2025?

  • All AI prompts, generated reviews, and raw model outputs will be released under an open licence within 30 days.
  • Stanford and partner Together AI will launch Agents-Lab, a permanent testbed where researchers can upload tasks for open AI agents to solve.
  • A follow-up conference is already scheduled for Q3 2026, this time allowing hybrid human-AI teams to compete head-to-head with fully autonomous agents.
